Itchenor Sailing Club’s race programme is well under way and kicked off over the Easter weekend with a variety of different weather conditions, writes Chris Blevins, the club’s rear-commodore sailing.

The Easter Trophy was competed for by 15 International 14s while 11 RS200s chased the Wallace Trophy.

Our classic keel boat fleets were also on the water in good numbers while many others were taking the opportunity to fit out and tune up.

Most of our dinghies and keel boats have now taken up their places on the staging or moorings. Our new race management boats are proving their worth, providing good platforms for organising challenging courses.

Wednesday-evening racing has started with the XODs’ fleet enjoying fun racing in an empty harbour followed by a friendly supper at the club. If you are local and would like to sample keel boat sailing on Wednesday or Thursday evenings just turn up around 5pm with your sailing kit.

During April we were proud to learn that three of our young sailors have been selected for the GB team to compete at both July’s World Championships in Japan and the Europeans in Bulgaria in August. Our best wishes go with Isabel and Katie Davies and Gemma Keers.

We are organising an open day on Sunday, May 17, for visitors to join us to experience the sailing, enjoy club facilities and absorb the atmosphere. New members can take advantage of our new attractive membership rates.

The club are fortunate enough to be able to race at all states of the tide and so our ten dinghy and keelboat fleets can use up to three race courses every Saturday and Sunday, as well as many weekday events.
