Setting up perfect racing experience

LOOKING forward to his first season at the helm at Goodwood racecourse is new managing director, Adam Waterworth, who has spent the winter months meticulously planning for the 21 top class meetings ahead.

He has his sights set firmly on ensuring that racegoers enjoy the perfect racing experience at this outstanding venue and believes that going racing should be about value for money, customer satisfaction and an overall enjoyable experience.

“These days it would be so easy to sit in front of a television with a laptop and all that on-line offers, but there is nothing to beat actually being there.

“The racing here has to be the very best that we can offer, people need to enjoy themselves and think of it as good value for money and having a great day out,” he said.

“Things have changed vastly in the time I have been involved in the industry. At one time the Jockey Club ran the whole of racing.

“The Levy Board’s funding scheme has changed and it is providing less than ever for racing.

“Today sponsorship and media rights are a big and important part of our income and there is a lot more competition for funding within the industry.”

He added: “Standards of customer service have gone up during the last 20 years because time and economic pressure has increased.

People have less time to spend at leisure and it is essential it is the best experience possible.

Goodwood is the most beautiful course in the country and we aim to keep it in top condition. We have an excellent clerk of the course in Seamus Buckley. I went out on the course with him recently and was amazed at its excellent condition, despite the frost, snow and heavy rain it has endured in recent months.”

Adam has come to Sussex well equipped for any challenges, with two decades of experience in running racecourses to his credit.
