Sevens with a sting

SEVENS technique will be at a premium if the weather stays hot on Sunday for Worthing Rugby Club's Bob Knight Tournament.

The teams who can economise on effort, make the ball do the work, and engineer or inspire the sudden decisive openings will survive longest in what will be the largest sporting event in the area this summer since the county cricket at Arundel Castle and the Worthing FC v Albion friendly.

Worthing's own team will join the semi-pros, who will include Scorpions, Apaches and Irish Exiles, in challenging the Fijian-dominated British Army side to retain their title and take home the lion's share of the 1,500 prize money the club and Kukri have forwarded.

The hosts never have problems raising teams for sevens at Roundstone Lane and they are expected to line up a first choice of Gavin Stephens, Dan Peach, Matt Farnes, Ben Coulson, Sean Bennett, Pete Cleveland and Rob Smith. They will be managed by head of rugby Ian Davies, who co-owns Scorpions with Terry Butler, the Worthing three-quarter who retired in the spring.
