SHOREHAM IN UMPIRE TROUBLE

A CONTROVERSIAL last-ball decision from Hove Medina umpire Reg Soffe denied Shoreham a definite tie and a possible victory at Buckingham Park on Saturday.

Needing two to win from the final ball from Medina skipper Steve Hartridge, Paul Harrocks '“ who had made 80 '“ reportedly took two or three strides down the wicket, was struck high on the leg, and '“ in response to Hartridge's appeal '“ an attempt to stop the batsmen running '“ umpire Soffe sent Harrocks on his way.

Shoreham skipper Julian Simpson said: "It's the worst thing I've ever seen in cricket. Even their fielders were embarrassed and said that Paul wasn't out. I asked them why they didn't withdraw the appeal, but they had no answer to that.

"They offered us the tie in the pub afterwards, but it's a bit late then. I just couldn't believe what happened."
