Sidley hit eight in Heath demolition

SIDLEY United surged into the quarter-finals of the RUR Charity Cup with an 8-0 destruction of Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.

Not normally noted for their goalscoring exploits, United turned on the style against their Division Two opponents.

Wes Tate rediscovered his scoring touch with a brace, the same number as Mark Freeman and Gerard Moyse while Kevin Rose and Dave Ward also got in on the act.

Joint manager Andy Laskey said: "We did play well. They are not an excellent side but they are not the worst side. It was nice to score eight and the pleasing thing was that we kept our shape and played the whole game. We didn't just boot it, we kept hold of it and knocked it around. It could have been more to be honest."

The strike pairing of Rose and Tate seems to be flourishing by the game and one or the other has scored in each of the club's last four fixtures.

It was Tate who lit the blue touch paper with the first in the 20th minute after three golden opportunities had come to nothing. Freeman, who enjoyed a decent afternoon at left wing-back and latterly up front, provided the delivery for Tate to round off a flowing move with a crisp side footed finish.

Rose found space at the back post to head the second 12 minutes later from Neil Maplesden's right wing cross moments before Dave Ward turned and thumped home left footed.

Despite being three goals to the good at the break, the Blues didn't let up and Freeman bravely put his head in where the boots were flying to make it 4-0 within a minute of the resumption.

The visitors then surprisingly elected to play a high defensive line and sure enough the decision duly backfired when the sprightly Tate ran through and rounded the keeper to slot the fifth before Freeman, by this stage playing up front, did likewise to tuck away number six.

Rose and Tate were then given a rest and replacement Moyse also joined in the fun by bagging goals seven and eight with headers, the second of which was a blinder from barely inside the box.
