Sidley in the running

A GROUP of officials and players from Sidley United are hoping to raise in the region of £1,500 for the James Duffell and Liam Cox stand appeal by running the Hastings Half Marathon on Sunday.

One of their more prominent backers is the Bexhill branch of J. & J. Carpets who have sponsored and produced special t-shirts for the party to wear on the day.

The idea was the brainchild of reserve team goalkeeper Danny Poole and he will be joined on the start line by joint first team managers Andy Laskey and Peter Heritage, chairman Dickie Day, physio Adie Lusted, players Jimmy Watson, Jason Finch, Adam Day, Kevin Rose and Rob Wiley plus Dave Kirk.

Laskey, who was described by Dickie Day in Saturday's match day programme as being "in full training, up to five Mars bars an hour so far", said: "The sponsorship is going really well and we're hoping to get roughly 1,500. The players have been as good as gold about it, they've supported everything they can and they're determined that there's a proper, permanent memorial." Anybody else wishing to contribute should contact any of the above c/o Sidley Sports Club on 217078.

United will be raising further funds by hosting a special quiz night in memory of the pair, who died in a car crash in October, on Saturday, April 3 (7.30pm). Tickets cost just 1 at the door.
