Sidley stand by their man

SIDLEY United have defended the player alleged to have assaulted Ringmer manager Glen Geard.

Geard required stitches after an alleged headbutt by a Sidley player during a changing room scuffle following the game between the sides at Gullivers on February 26.

A linesman who witnessed the incident has reported the matter to the County League who, due to its seriousness, have in turn referred it to the Sussex FA.

Sidley chairman Dickie Day said: "I have seen a copy of the linesman's report and the matter is now with the police and FA.

"It is not a case of our player attacking the manager, if anything it's more the other way around. I can tell you that one of our players also ended up with stitches."

A hearing at the Sussex FA is likely to be set in April.

Burgess Hill looked to have all but clinched the Sussex One title as they are now 22 points clear of Sidley, who travel to Southwick on Saturday March 9 and Peacehaven & Telscombe on March 12.
