Sigere's superb four-goal blitz

Conference SouthSutton United 1 Lewes 5ROOKS'S striker Jean-Michel Sigere blasted high-flying Sutton United with a sparkling four-goal performance at Gander Green Lane on Tuesday evening.

Sigere, asked to play a lone striking role with Gavin Holligan out through injury, took his goal tally for the season to 15 to be the league's top scorer and completed his hat-trick in just 18 minutes as the United defenders found him too hot to handle.

Watched by former players Jon Nurse and Junior Kadi, Lewes maintained their place at the head of the table as they totally dominated the match and hardly gave the United strikers, led by former Rook Luke Cornwall, a sight of goal all evening.

Lewes manager Steve King said: 'We were magnificent and it could have been a lot more. We could have had two penalties in the first half for blatant handballs.

'It was a commanding performance and we never gave them a chance. Our counter-attacking was fantastic and Siggy's pace on the night was frightening.

'He's the best striker Lewes have ever had and his attitude is 100 per cent, spot on, and on top of that he's a real gentleman, he never gives us a bad moment. The Sutton management told us after the game that Siggy's performance was the best they had seen from a centre-forward at the club in years.'

In front of a crowd of 628 Sigere scored his first goal in the opening minute. United had trouble all evening coping with goalkeeper Paul Wilkerson's long kicks and from his first the Frenchman latched onto the ball on the edge of the penalty area to fire low into the net as goalkeeper Phil Wilson flapped and the home defenders hesitated.

It was 2-0 on eight minutes as more defensive shortcomings allowed Sigere to fire high and powerfully into the roof of the net.

On 18 minutes Karl Beckford found Kirk Watts in acres of space on the left and Sigere met his cross, kicking the ball into the ground before it bounced into the net for his hat-trick.

Leon Legge was booked for a bad tackle on Craig Watkins and Sutton brought on Gary Elliott for the injured Matt Gray. They had created little, with Wilkerson only called on to make one diving interception.

Sigere should have scored his fourth on 40 minutes when the totally unmarked Watts put in the perfect cross and the striker from close range saw his header pushed away by Wilson.

A minute later it was 4-0 as Steve Robinson's header hit a post, bounced off a defender and Paul Kennett drove home from close in.

Sigere had another chance on 53 minutes when Dean Hooper put him clear but he fired past the post.

Kennett was booked for delaying a free-kick before Sigere got his fourth on 59 minutes. Beckford's powerful shot was pushed away by Wilson, the ball fell to Dean Brennan who fed Sigere to cheekily backheel the ball into the Sutton net.

A moment of hesitation by Wilkerson saw Robinson rescue the situation with a great saving tackle before King made three quick substitutions, Mo Harkin replacing Sigere, who had a slight groin strain, Owen Price coming on for Watts and Morgaro Gomes for Beckford.
