Six for Amek as Priory get off mark

Sussex LeagueSidley 203 Lewes Priory 207-6LEWES Priory made amends for the previous week's defeat with a comfortable four-wicket win over Sidley and a six-wicket debut for the club's new overseas player Amek Jagernauth.

He is the third Trinidadian in consecutive years to wear Lewes colours thanks to the efforts of club captain Michael Murray and his father, the former West Indies keeper Deryck.

Amek, whose potential nicknames are plentiful, bowls a tidy off break and offered plenty of variation which resulted in figures of 6-66 from 18 overs.

It was a grey, overcast afternoon and conditions were far from ideal for the fielding side. Drizzle threatened to take the players off on more than one occasion and Amek's success with the ball helped to overcome his introduction to Sussex League cricket in a drab location, especially as he had only flown in from Trinidad the previous Thursday.

There were some useful batting partnerships from Sidley. Opener John Haffenden made 35, Peter King 34 and their overseas player Kashif Rashid would have been disappointed with his 19. As soon as a partnership developed it was broken by the bowling side which resulted in Sidley losing seven wickets for 149.

However, the tail wagged with league veteran, but fit as ever, Tyrone Wildman scoring 30 valuable runs. Sidley failed to bat their maximum number of overs of 53 which, as it turned out, proved to be crucial.

Priory had 50 overs to reach the target and lost Nick Walters early on, lbw for six.

The ability to take quick singles has improved greatly this year and Murray and Aspden batted well in a 68 run second-wicket partnership. Aspden went lbw but James Chetwood continued his good form with a 47-ball 50.

Murray's took twice as many balls but then the innings wobbled with the loss of four wickets for 15 runs. Murray was needlessly run out and John Haffenden took two catches to dismiss Beechey and Chetwood.

At 188-6 with 16 needed from the remaining five overs wicketkeeper Paul Farrow came to the rescue with 15 and the target was reached with two overs remaining.

Kashif Rashid was the most effective Sidley bowler with 3-67 from 17 overs.
