Slindon Golf and Country Club raises more than £7,000 for charity

AS a result of fundraising activities carried out last year, Slinfold Golf and Country Club has presented almost £7,300 to St Barnabas House, Worthing.

With Gift Aid the total value of these activities should exceed 9000.

Last year's Golf Captain, Terry Wills, explained the reason for selecting St Barnabas as the 2009 Captains' Charity.

He said: "Frankly it was a daunting decision as there were so many excellent charities to choose from. In the end it was an easy choice. "

My very good friend, Roger Cliffe, sadly died from a brain tumour . He spent a little time at the hospice and this gave me an insight into the excellent work that went on there. It seemed natural, therefore, to support St Barnabas in memory of Roger."

Faye Williams, who was Lady Captain last year, commented "When Terry suggested that we both chose St Barnabas as our Captains' Charity, I had no hesitation in agreeing. The Hospice does an extremely difficult job wonderfully well and they had a particular need for extra funding with the construction of their superb, brand new and state of the art building."

When asked how this fantastic sum was raised, Terry replied:

"It was a mixture of the old and new. We employed a number of traditional methods such as raffles (our ladies are brilliant at organising them), Pro/ Captain challenges (where our excellent Professionals, Ryan Fenwick and Lloyd Davies, gave freely of their valuable time over the course of no less than twelve hard fought matches) and charity auctions.

There was also an unusual initiative based around how many balls Terry lost during his year as Captain. THis raised 430 and Terry lost 317 balls in 182 rounds of golf!
