Slinfold skipper says they must apply themselves with the bat

Slinfold captain Guy Thorne called on his side to apply themselves more with the bat after their 57-run defeat at Rottingdean.

The skipper felt they could have knocked off the host’s total of 180-8 at which they declared on in the 53rd over.

Rottingdean captain George Ledden led the way for his side with 61 as James Bergin added 28 onto Henry Ledden’s earlier 21.

Akeem Jordan claimed 4-69 and Sean Overton took 3-14 with the ball, before Slinfold replied with 123 all out.

Thorne topscored with 48 as Jordan made 18, but only two other batsmen made double figures as they lost wicket regularly through the innings.

Thorne said: “It was very much a game of two halves for us on Saturday. We bowled and fielded superbly, but went out to bat with the wrong mindset and unfortunately let ourselves down.

“Things started in fantastic fashion when Akeem took a wicket with the first ball of the day - the third week running he’s done that, and from then on, we were patient, and had to work hard for our wickets.

“Richard Harris bowled a really tight opening spell and gave nothing away. There were 29 years of age between my two opening bowlers, which was probably the biggest age gap in the league, and the boys bowled great. We applied pressure throughout, and Rottingdean themselves batted very patiently and their innings never really got going as we gave them nothing.

“Sean finished with his best figures for the first team taking three wickets in the closing stages, and I was pleased to be chasing 180 on that deck.

“All we needed to do was repeat what we did last week, bat 47 overs and tick the runs off by playing straight and taking advantage of any spare stuff, but it didn’t pan out that way. The lads just need to know to apply themselves - which we’ll be doing next week.”
