Snooker ace Jimmy back with a bang

AFTER 16 months in the wilderness and a dip in form, O'Sullivan's snooker player Jimmy Robertson has enjoyed a dramatic change of fortune by featuring in two finals in three weeks.

The latest final saw the 20-year-old Bexhill cueist in scintillating form as he emerged victorious in the first event of six in the English Under-21 Stadium Tour at Hall Green, Birmingham.

The tournament attracted most of the top young amateur snooker players in the country.

Robertson sped through the group stages on Saturday, winning all five of his matches 3-0 and knocking in breaks along the way of 106, 103, 89 ,86, 60 and 54 to qualify top of his group and gain the number one seeding for the knock-out stages the next day.

In order to win his first final in more than a year the Bexhill player would have to overcome four junior England internationals and he set the ball rolling with a 4-2 defeat of Jack Lisowski (Gloucester) in the last 16 after breaks of 61 and 97.

He followed this up with another 4-2 win over Stuart Carrington (Grimsby) in the quarter-finals after rattling in breaks of 85 and 50 plus.

Robertson then came back from 2-0 down to win 4-3 against 17-year-old Gyles Behbood (Harrogate) in the semi-finals, a break of 80 in the fifth frame helping him come through a tricky encounter.

The final turned into a one-sided affair as Stephen Craigie (Wallsend) was dispatched 4-0 on the back of breaks of 80, 70 plus and a 65 clearance in the last frame.

Robertson's first premier stadium title means he sits at number one in the English Amateur under-21 rankings. The winner and runner-up at the end of the season will represent England in the World Under-21s, which could be held in Bahrain in 2007, with the winner gaining promotion to the World Professional Tour.
