Softball: Falcons celebrate national runners-up spot

Chichester Falcons Softball Club did the city proud as they came away from the British softball nationals tournament with the runners-up trophy.

Their strong league position last season earned the Falcons their spot in softball’s most prestigious event, in which they were pitted against 12 other teams from all over the UK at the Farnham Park Baseball & Softball Complex.

The Falcons faltered at the first hurdle as London’s Base Invaders got away with a 8-5 win but the Chichester side rallied and proceeded to dominate the rest of the day, defeating the Sefton Sharks 7-4, Cardiff Red Sox 6-4, Manchester Tigers 11-10 and London team United Nations 8-2.

Top of their group by the end of the day, the Falcons gathered for camping and food to prepare themselves for a tough day to follow.

Early-morning blues struck again as the Falcons fell to the London Rookies 12-4 but got to wreak revenge on the Base Invaders in a return match by winning 7-5 to finish top of the round-robin table.

The first play-off was yet again another match against Base Invaders but by now the Falcons had a good handle on the London teams’ strengths and weaknesses, and again dispatched them 7-5 to reach the final against Manchester Meerkats.

Sadly the challenge was too great for the Falcons as the Meerkats pounded the ball to put themselves 20 runs ahead after three innings to invoke the mercy rule and end the game, leaving the Falcons happy and proud to pick up the runner-up trophy.

The Falcons can now look to win their two remaining league games of the season before work begins on an upcoming Chichester indoor six-a-side softball league in the autumn.
