Solid start to season netted by Chichester uni girls

Following the success of last year’s pre-season camp, Megan Samuels, the new president, and vice-president Amy Watson decided to run the camp once more. With many girls attending it was a great way to start the campaign.

It was a tough start for Chichester first against King Medics firsts but there was no stopping them and they notched a well-deserved 52-36 win, which showed a whole team effort and commitment until the final whistle.

Player of the match was Emma Shaw at goalkeeper – in her first match for Chichester she dominated the defence with her excellent interceptions, rebounds and accurate passes out of defence.

The seconds were away to Surrey, a team previously two leagues above them. Player of the match was Klaudia Piwowar for great work in both attack and defence showing herself to be a very versatile player.

Chichester lost but there were a lot of positives.

Away to Portsmouth seconds was a hard start for the thirds. This team had had only a few hours training together so to loseonly 29-27 was a good effort.

Katrina Richards-White played wing attack and centre and proved versatile with brilliant feeds into the circle.

The fourths showed Brunel fifths Chichester are here to win this year, beating them 54-15. Goal defence Becca Jelley was player of the match thanks to some amazing interceptions.

The fifths turned trailed at half-time to Westminster seconds but commanded the second half to win 37-34. Beth Heir was awarded player of the match for her faultless shooting and excellent rebounds.

Week two brought two wins out of four for the Chichester sides.

The firsts took on the University of Hertfordshire in a feisty game. There were great attacking moves but they ended up losing 39-35. Kayleigh Smith was player of the match.

Tight defence and great pick-ups by the centre court players allowed seconds to beat Brunel thirds 32-30. Chloe Chapman was named player of the match for her excellent interception. In the final quarter, Laura Meridew did not miss one shot.

The thirds took on Brunel fourths and won impressively 42-19. Sarah Judd was player of the game for her excellent work in goal defence. Chi’s fourths were away to Westminster and after a great win the previous week, spirits were high. They knew this game would be tough with the opposition a first team and it ended 41-21 to Westminster. The team worked extremely hard and Lucy Simmons was player of the match.
