Sorry Sidley dumped from cup

Two wonderful strikes by Town striker Gary Brockwell and a brilliant free kick by Yemi Odubade gave Town a healthy lead before an own goal by United defender Neil Maplesden sealed the win.

Shae Spreafico came on as a substitute to grab a consolation goal after getting a slight touch from Russell Eldridge's corner deep into injury time, but it was more than Sidley deserved after such an insipid performance.

Heritage said: "It was all pretty grim really. We did alright in the first half but the two goals either side of half time killed us. We didn't play well at all in the second half and we just can't seem to stop conceding goals."

The game could have been different had Dave Carey converted a great chance to give United the lead after only four minutes, but after rounding home keeper Mark Oldroyd, his shot from a tight angle hit the side netting.

Paul Balch created some space for himself with a nice bit of skill before unleashing a rasping 25 yard drive which sailed wide, but that was about as good as it got for United.

Town started to show why they currently lead Sussex Division Two and took the lead on the stroke of half time thanks to a brilliant 20 yard strike from Brockwell.

The Town hot-shot then grabbed his 17th goal of the season to double the home side's lead two minutes after the break when he capped a good run and turn with an emphatic finish.

Yemi Odubade hit the third nine minutes later with a brilliant curling free kick which completely wrong footed Jon Gardner.

The scoring was completed when the hapless Maplesden, who had come on as a second half substitute, was unable to get out of the way of a punched clearance from a corner by Gardner to score a cruel own goal.

United's misery was compounded when Gardner had to go off five minutes from time with bruised ribs leaving Maplesden to deputise bravely in goal, but by then the game was already done and dusted.

UNITED will be looking to avenge the defeat when they meet Eastbourne Town again of Tuesday in the third round of the RUR Charity Cup at Gullivers, kick off 7.45pm.
