Speed king Bird sets sights on karting's British championship

He has been selected to join Fusion Motorsport, one of the top cadet kart-racing teams in the UK, to contest the British Championship.

Fusion Motorsport have won the championship for the past three years and are seen as the team to beat in national cadet karting in the UK.

Following a trial at Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire, Bird was selected as one of four drivers to join the team and has already begun training with them for the season, which runs from February until October.

Bird has been crowned vice-champion in the Forest Edge club championship and contested the final championship rounds at Shenington and Whilton Mill.

A tense and exciting season resulted in many podium positions and trophies for him in 2011.

Bird, who lives in Chidham and attends Great Ballard School, spends most weekends racing and has now begun a winter fitness training programme after school to build upper body strength, co-ordination and general fitness.

He also attended the i-Zone driver training school at the Silverstone grand prix circuit, where he will receive coaching in race-craft, race strategy, concentration, motivation, fitness and diet from top racing drivers.

He will be put through his paces in a single-seater racing car simulator, which enables the instructors to access and hone his driving skills.

To run competitively at this level, Bird needs to have the best engines and equipment.

He hopes to find some local companies to support him in his quest to achieve at the highest level in British Cadet Karting.
