He originally came in as a short-term replacement after Kyle Hughes broke his leg when crashing in his second ride for the club in the season-opening fixture on Good Friday.

Ellis has dropped only one point in 15 races since joining the Eagles.

Club director Connor Dugard said the initial plan was for Ellis to help out until Hughes was fit.

Now Hughes has said he will be out for possibly a further six to eight weeks.

Dugard said: “With a really serious fixture list ahead, I couldn’t take that risk. Kyle understood and we came to the mutual agreement that it would be unfair on Kyle to jump straight back in at number 1 with all the pressure of an out and out number 1 with the way the team has been built. There are no hard feelings between us and Kyle knows he is more than welcome at Arlington.”

Club chairman Martin Dugard said: “I spoke to Adam and asked if he would see out the year and his answer was ‘yes, he’d love too’.

“Our fixtures fit very well with his schedule and he’s been brilliant in the pits. He comes in and tells the reserves what to do in heat 2 and that proved last night.”

The management would like to apologise for the amount of team changes but they have all been forced upon them through injury, another being with Nick Phillips who has a suspected broken scaphoid after crashing on Saturday.
