Squash: Bognor are too for Chichester to handle

Bognor fielded a strong second team in their home match against Chichester seconds and consequently had their first success of the season.

Regular Jon Burley at No5 had a relatively straightforward win against Julian Clayton 9-0, 9-1, 9-4 while captain Dave Meagher also had a three-game victory - Rob Winterhalder beaten 9-0, 9-2, 9-2 - to put the home team two up.

Bognor’s third string Josh Bennett, making a welcome first appearance at home for some time, had a testing match against Brendan Haughey.

The first was extremely close with Bennett just getting home 9-8 and he rushed the second 9-0 before Haughey pushed all the way in the third game, with the Bognor player just having the edge at 10-9.

The No2-string match was Chichester’s only success when Tom Earl beat Steve Carruthers in a five-game tussle. Carruthers went one down, pulled back to lead 2-1, only for Earl to level and take the hard-fought decider - the score 5-9, 9-6,9-6, 3-9, 7-9.

No1 Luke Allen played Ed McCarthy and his usual speed around court gave him a straight-games win, 9-6, 9-5, 9-6, to leave Bognor 4-1 winners and taking 19 points to Chichester’s three.
