STEYNING JUST FALL SHORT

FADING LIGHT and a tight spell of spin bowling by Saints' left-armer Henry Ledden just robbed Steyning of a victory in their Sussex League Premier game on Saturday.

Chasing a St James score of 214-8, Steyning were going well at 147-1 and 15 overs left with James Carpenter and Giles Haywood at the crease.

Haywood, the more fluent of the two, was then bowled by Ledden for 56, but Steyning were still in the box seat, needing a touch over five an over for victory.

The required rate remained constant throughout the next five overs. Matt Pound and Greg Barnes came and went, and 39 were left to get off the last eight with Steyning 176-4 money on the batting side, one would have expected.

But the cloud cover thickened and St James seamer Mike Thompson bowled wide of the wicket a little too wide for Steyning's liking but umpire Ron Grey wasn't inclined to give too much all day.
