Stirlands give leaders Glynde a scare

Stirlands had to play out for a steady draw against league challengers Glynde & Beddingham in division two of cricket's Sussex League '“ but it could have been so much better.

After electing to bat, Glynde started steadily against a Stirlands side depleted by injuries and unavailability.

Chris Tebb, making his debut, opened the bowling alongside Alex Garlick and bowled with great skill and control - something that has been lacking for the Stirlands bowling this season.

It was Garlick, however, that struck first by clean-bowling Rouland then Warren before Tebb claimed Shepheard.

The introduction of Nick Hunt against the stiff breeze kept the run rate under control as Garlick continued his marathon spell. Wickets continued to fall for the young Aussie and he eventually finished with eight for 99 from 27 straight overs.

It was a great spell and one that will provide great confidence for the rest of the season.

Chasing 176 for victory, Stirlands had a terrible start losing Bboth openers for no score. Garlick and Clowes steadied the ship and at 51 for two, Stirlands looked set to mount a victory charge.

However four wickets fell for the addition of only ten. Another batting collapse left Stirlands no choice but to hang on for the draw, collecting 11 points to Glynde’s ten.

This week Stirlands travel to bottom-of-the-table Lewes aiming for a timely win.
