Strong case for the H&B defence

Hastings & Bexhill Rugby Club head coach Kevin Smith has praised his team’s defence.

The 22-0 victory away to Whitstable last weekend was H&B’s second shutout of the season and they’ve conceded less points than any other club in Kent One.

Smith said: “Our defensive record is very, very good and we’re going to work a damn sight harder to keep it. Good defences win you leagues.”

The division’s top six teams, and seven of the leading eight in fact, have remarkably all lost two games, giving it a very wide open feel.

H&B go into the visit of third-bottom HSBC tomorrow (Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm) in fourth place, six points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

The 100 per cent record of Rye Rugby Club, meanwhile, is expected to face its toughest examination of the season so far tomorrow. The New Roaders visit fourth-placed Chichester III in Sussex Division One.

“It will be a very interesting test,” said Rye chairman Tony Pierce. “They’ve been playing ever so well. They’ve lost a couple of games but quite probably this is going to be our toughest test yet.”

Chichester showed how dangerous they are last weekend by running leaders Eastbourne close before eventually going down 35-24. Rye made it six wins out of six with a battling comeback away to Hove III.

Pete Brown is still unavailable and Joe Morrell is rated very doubtful after twisting his knee against Hove.
