Strong winds fail to blow event off course

Hastings Athletic Club successfully hosted the latest Brooks Sussex Cross-Country League match despite some of the windiest conditions in the league’s history.

Winds of around 40mph swept across the Bexhill Down course on Saturday, but Terry Skelton, Pete Standen and their team of course markers and marshals did a sterling job to ensure the event ran smoothly.

A number of athletes from the host club produced decent performances, none more so than Jonas Judah, who won the under-11 boys’ race by a distance. Adam Morrissy was fifth and Isaiah Wilson came sixth in his maiden race, while Naney Barlow was the 10th under-11 girl.

Isaac Elam was a very good second in the under-13 boys’ race, with James Crombie fifth and Carlos Nieto-Parr 10th.

Maya Ramnarine came third in the girls’ equivalent, with Erica Body 12th, Amalie Primdal 15th, Shannon Hopkins-Parry 16th and Evie Clements 18th.

George Pool finished second in the under-15 boys’ race and was closing in on the winner. Marcus Ramnarine was 13th and Toby Salmon 23rd.

Ellen Crombie led for 99% of the under-15 girls’ race - which was arguably the best of the day - only to be pipped in the final 50 metres by Almi Nerurkar (Brighton Phoenix). Harmony Cooper defied a stitch to come eighth.
