Newcomer Richard Cox was No5 for Bognor but was given few chances by Rob Brockwell, who won in straight games, as did Arun’s fourth string Kim Long against junior George Meaby, who despite enthusiasm and good rallies lost 3-0.

Bognor No3 Steve Kus had a good battle with Chris Hooton. After going two down, he fought back to 2-2, but was unable to keep up the momentum. In the No2 string match, Bognor’s Jon Burley had a see-saw tussle with Graham North, levelling at 1-1 then 2-2 before the Arun player made short work of the decider.

Only in the No1 clash were Bognor to taste success when Dave Meagher beat Bernie Heather 9-5, 9-4, 9-6.

Bognor took seven points to Arun’s 17.

Bognor’s first team, lacking key players, were unable to fulfil their fixture at Copthorne and the home team were given a walkover.
