Super Sam sings along in the rain

The Lewes Athletics Club's National Young Athletes League match on Sunday was abandoned towards the end because of the continuous heavy rain.

The rain got worse as the afternoon progressed and a thunderstorm caused the suspension of the meeting, which the respective team managers turned into abandonment without the steeplechase and the relays being held.

It was thought by many to be the worst conditions ever at the Lewes track but it must be remembered that when the arena was officially opened some seven years ago the meeting was held in a continuous torrential downpour including thunder and lightning.

The conditions made it difficult for all the athletes to perform up to standard and probably the best effort of the meeting was a splendid under-15 pole vault when Sam Brown set a new personal best, clearing 3.00 metres for victory.

Brown also won his javelin competition with 32.29m and took second place in the hammer with 21.72m.

However, fellow Lewes athlete Tom Glenn was awarded the best male field athlete of the day for his clearance of 1.33m to win the under-13 high jump. Glenn combined his high jumping with a useful second place in the 1,500 metres in 5 minutes 20.1 seconds.

Eliott Franklin-Page was another under-15 winner, clocking 26.6 seconds in the 200m after placing second in the 100m in 13.0.

In the under-15 girls events Isabella King won an impressive 800m in 2:29.8sec, a time faster than that clocked by teammate Becky Hawkes as she eased to victory in the under-17 race.

Faye Williams (12.05m) won the hammer and Jordan Hiatt (7.15m) took the shot putt in the under-17 girls group.

In the under-17 boys group Lewes runners Andrew Wilkinson and Ashley Williams swept the board in the 1,500m, with Wilkinson clocking 4:29.7 to win the A race and Williams 4:40.9 in the B event.

In the 3,000m Matt Basford transferred his fine cross country running form to the track for a convincing victory in 9:34.2.
