Superb Raiders inflict first defeat on leaders Richmond

WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club recorded an outstanding 21-17 over National 2 South leaders Richmond on Saturday (November 5).

Richmond had won all 10 of their games heading into the match, with a four-try bonus point in each game, while Raiders were looking to bounce back after a 49-14 loss at Hartpury followed nine successive victories.

Richmond touched down their only try of the game after just two minutes through Tom Chesters.

Gareth Wynne was off target with the conversion but he kicked over a penalty on eight minutes to give the visitors a 8-0 lead.

Joe Govett got Raiders back into the game with an excellent try on 15 minutes, and Matt McLean added the extras.

Toby Henry responded with a drop goal for Richmond on 29 minutes but Raiders responded with two converted tries in three minutes through Kiba Richards and McLean to go 21-11 ahead.

Wynne kicked two penalties late in the half to make it 21-17 at the break.

Raiders survived a spell down to 14 men in the second half when Ollie Luke was sinbinned and also a lengthy spell of Richmond pressure late on to record an excellent win in front of a crowd of around 1,000 at Roundstone Lane.
