Sussex ace Roe roars to decathlon success

In his first season as a senior athlete, Chichester's Charlie Roe produced the performance of his athletics career to amass more than 6,000 points in his opening senior decathlon.

It came at the home counties event at Stoke and put him into the all-time Sussex top ten with 6,206 points.

Starting off with a steady sub 12-second 100m, Roe was soon into his stride with a new personal best of 6.76m in the long jump and another highest ever clearance of 1.98m in the high jump, which in itself puts him second in the club rankings.

Coming from a jumping background, Roe has been working on his throwing technique - which paid dividends with marks of more than 10m in the shot and 41m in the javelin.

After a solid 51-second 400m at the end of day one, two more personal bests followed on the second day with 16.7sec in the 110ms hurdles and a speedy 4.29min in the final event, the 1,500m.

The ex-Bishop Luffa pupil is now studying at the University of East Anglia.
