Sussex trampolinists are making great leaps

The young talent, from Felpham, secured a gold medal in the National Development Qualifier first-round qualifying event in Gillingham at the start of the month.

But that was not the end of his success as he went on to win a National League bronze medal at The Copper Box just a few weeks later.

In the first regional qualifier, Newton-Young produced a fine display to come out on top.

He was competing in the level five event for 13 to 14-year-olds and needed to score 42 or higher in order to clinch a gold medal.

That score was no obstacle for the young talent as he reached a total of 48.5 on the way to his gold medal.

His victory was not the only reason to cheer for Flitecrew as they went on to win four golds, two silvers and three bronzes in total.

It was a magnificent day for all involved with Flitecrew.

The next NDP qualifier comes in February of next year for Flitecrew with the competition taking place in February.

There is also more to look forward to for Flitecrew with the south-east semi-final taking place in March, while the NDP regional team final will be held in May of next year.

Following a fine performance in the NDP first round qualifier, Newton-Young then prepared himself for the National League Finals.

Once again the young talent would win a medal but this time around he was forced to settle for a bronze and third place.

On the opening day he was top of the league three, 11 to 12-year old, leaderboard, meaning he booked a place in Sunday’s showpiece finale.

He once again produced a fine display and came home in third place.

Flitecrew took 11 competitors to the competition and Newton-Young was not the only medallist.

Newton-Young was joined by Emily Roche and Amber Hawkins in coming away with a bronze for their efforts.

DRAGONFLYERS Trampoline Club had six qualifiers for the recent National League Finals at The Copper Box in London.

Libby Morton, 11, was the Flyer with the highest finish coming away with a fourth placing.

Izzy Hauxwell, 12, achieved the same feat as Morton but their efforts were all the more impressive as they were competing in the under-16 junior synchro.

This was a phenomenal achievement by the pair and they were not finished there.

Hauxwell pulled off two stunning high-difficulty routines in the under-12 girls’ individual event to claim a sixth position.

Morton was not far behind and she finished in ninth place.

Anya Johnston was another who impressed and performed a series of double and twisting somersaults with immense height and accuracy.

She took part in the under-14 girls’ individual event and ended up in sixth place.

Sofija Kalnicenko and Toby Smith also jumped well, gaining 12th and 17th position respectively.

Kalnicenko’s effort came in the girls’ 11-to-12-years individual event, while Smith’s was in the boys’ under-13 category.

Everyone involved with the club was extremely impressed and proud of all the entries in the National League finals.
