Sussex vice-captain Brown looks to lead by example

After scoring over 1,000 runs last season, the 27 year old was handed the role of vice-captain, with Luke Wright captain across all three formats.

The wicket-keeper batsmen is delighted having been given the role and is determined to show head coach Mark Davis his worth to the side.

He said: “The first thing you have to do is lead in the way you behave and the way you play. I think that is my biggest role.

“Being given leadership, I have got to set the right examples, number one. But then, secondly, I think its backing up whatever Luke says or whatever decisions Luke goes with or the management.

“I think it is my job to help communicate that to the rest of the squad, why we have made them decisions or why they have made them decisions.

“The summer can become disjointed at times so just to try to keep the whole squad together and hopefully I can help knit that together.”

Along with the new role, Brown wants to continue his impressive form from last season, which involved him scoring four centuries.

He said: “I don’t set too many personal goals in terms of runs. Obviously you have got an idea what you want to do.

“Last year I scored 1000 runs which was amazing and I would love to be able to replicate that. I think I would just like to be really secure on all forms, especially in white ball cricket.

“If I can get all three formats, I suppose that’s every cricketers dream and every county cricketer wants to try and play for England.”

Having progressed through the Sussex youth and academy set up, Brown knows what it takes to become a professional and emphasises the need to enjoy it.

He said: “The biggest thing is you have to enjoy it. I know it is a little bit cliché but you hear a lot now about younger guys, especially in the age groups being told about what you have to do to be professional.

“I think that’s important but I don’t really remember trying to be a professional when I was young.

“I think it is about having fun, about enjoying competing and being the best you can be and then let the rest fall into place.”
