Teenager wins county bowls title

STUART Holland Jnr became the youngest winner of the Under-25s Sussex County Bowls Championships after a thrilling final against highly rated Adrian Finnie.

The 14-year-old, who plays for Egerton Park indoors and Bexhill outdoors, led for most of the match at Arun IBC but there were never more than a couple of shots in it.

The outcome was eventually decided on a measure after Stuart chose not to play his final wood as he felt he already had the edge over his opponent, an opinion confirmed by the umpire.

"I was about 50 per cent confident I would get the decision but it was close," admitted Stuart. "I just guessed right."

The Bexhill High School pupil's 21-19 win was quite an achievement for someone so young because he was up against the reigning county champion in Finnie, 22, who plays out of Brighton club Preston.
