Tennis ace nets town title

ASHLEY Neaves reclaimed the men’s singles title in the 1066 Hastings Tennis Championships.

Hastings-born Neaves last won the title four years ago but this time he beat The Green’s Ian Oliver 6-1, 6-0.

Amanda Ruck (The Green) retained her ladies’ singles title by beating Barbara Fentiman (Amherst) 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, Gillian Crossett and Pearl Hare overcame The Green pair of Joyce Bush and Beaula Page 6-1, 6-3 in the ladies’ doubles.

Bush and Page took to the court again later, this time in the 45/over mixed doubles. Bush partnered by Paul Tune (The Green) beat Page and her partner Mark Bright (Amherst) 6-2, 6-1.

The 60/over mixed doubles was an all-Amherst affair in which Yvonne Baldwin and Jeff Gedge beat Christine Greenwood and Hugh Sullivan 6-2, 6-2.

The 18/under boys’ singles was played in round robin format and the winner was Tristan Munro (The Green) and runner-up was Ben Stappleton (Amherst). The 14/under boys’ singles, played in the same format, was won by Billy Harris and runner-up was Theo Plummer.

The men’s doubles final and mixed doubles final will be played at a later date. Organisers were very pleased to welcome some new entrants into the competition including those who are not affiliated to any clubs, while thanks go out to Amherst for hosting the Finals’ Day.
