Tennis: Road to Wimbledon starts in Chichester

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted the HSBC Road to Wimbledon 2015 events for 14-and-under boys and girls.

Road to Wimbledon is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives all 14-and-under players the chance to compete on the world-famous grass courts of SW19.

Clubs and schools are encouraged to enter and stage a tournament for their members and pupils rated between 10.2 and 7.1.

The boys’ singles event was a 16-player elimination draw with each match comprising two short sets to four games, with a match tie-break if necessary. All first-match losers qualified for a consolation draw.

Bronze was won by Tom Davy, who beat Freddie Williams 5-3, 3-5, (10-4). Edward Poole won the gold medal and qualified for the county stage of the event, to be held in July, by beating William Broom, who collected the silver medal – the score 2-4, 4-2, (10-5) in the final.

In the girls’ singles, bronze was won by Emma Warburton, who beat Alyssia Jansz 5-4, 4-0. Caitlin Chequer won the gold medal and qualifies for the county stage of the event, beating Francesca Aitchison who collected the silver medal 4-1, 4-1, in the final.

Court supervisor Amy Wright said: “There was an extremely high standard of play from all players throughout this one-day event. It was very inspiring to see so many good young players coming along and enjoying the competition experience offered at Chichester.”
