That's 'andy - Bognor golf pair have Portugal in their sights

Andy Frankling and Andy Weir of Bognor GC have reached the UK finals of the 2012 Howdidido national pairs betterball matchplay championships.

The overall finals will be held in Vilamoura, Portugal, in February, over five rounds on the Oceanico championship courses, which include The Old Course, Victoria, Faldo, Laguna and Millenium.

On the way to the UK finals they beat pairs from Rusper, West Chiltington, Chichester and Reigate Heath. They won the southern area final at Botley Park with a score of 45 Stableford points played off three-quarters handicap.

Weir plays off six, Frankling off 17.

David Turner took over as captain from Roger Selway at the recent Bognor Golf Club seniors’ annual meeting.

Because of severe inclement weather, 2012 was the first year in which two matches had to be cancelled.

Even so it was a very successful season with 18 matches won, 12 lost and one drawn.

In July the seniors had an outstanding run when they won six of their seven matches, five of which were played away.

Some 65 members represented the seniors’ section and outgoing captain Selway noted that in particular excellent support had yet again been given by Clive Millett, who played in 27 of these matches.

He said it had been a memorable year in that, to encourage greater integration of members over 55 to participate in the section’s activities, it was decided the vets should now be known as the seniors.

The seniors are looking forward to the coming season, when there will be 36 matches against their friends from 18 clubs in Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

In their first match of 2013 the seniors lost a very close game at Rowlands Castle - 5-3 the final score.

The January Medal at Cowdray Park brought a good turnout of 88 and for once it was played without too many weather problems.

A large field contested the first monthly Stableford of Cowdray Park seniors’ year in cold and damp conditions with slow greens.

Nevertheless scoring was very good under the conditions, with Brian Carpenter recording an excellent 38 points in division two in the first group out.

Jan de Vries, a frequent winner, set the pace in division one with a solid 36 points.

Veteran Ray Tucker is used to early-morning course conditions and he put his experience to good effect by returning his best score for some time, 39 points, to secure the lead in division two, which he never surrendered.

His score was equalled later on by Alan Cram but Cram lost out on countback. This was Cram’s second top-ten finish in recent months. Both players have ensured their place in the end-of-season seniors’ championship.

The struggle for division one was similarly as close with Rob Doney assuming the lead with 39 points, his victory a fitting consolation for his near misses at the end of last year.

Later, substitute Harvey Terry came close with 38 points, which earned him second place on countback. Doney and Terry have also earned their places in the seniors’ championship.

At the rear of the field there was a very strong three-ball involving single-handicap players Paul Owen, John Doran and Dave Lucking. Owen emerged most successful with 38 points and third place.

The raffle raised £170 for the Mary How Trust, topped up by another £40 in donations.
