THE YEAR OF THE LANCER

FORMER captain Bob Ralls' loyalty and dedication to his bowls club not only contributed to Lancing's all-embracing club fours success this season.

It earned him special recognition at the Stracey Shield end-of-season presentation and game at Pavilion on Saturday.

Skip Ralls received the Worthing Herald Stracey Shield Performance of the Year shield after Lancing submitted a recommendation in response to the request on these pages.

After last season, Ralls moved to Horndean, just inside the Hampshire border. But despite the prospect of driving a 50-mile round trip to play each match, he remained loyal to the Lancing cause and stayed with the club. He won half his 12 matches as skip.

The three previous winners were all skips with outstanding playing records for that season '” Ron Darling, Ron Cocozza, and Pat Graysmark who was in strong contention again this year as the leading Stracey skip. Other possible winners were Lancing captain Ken Holman, and Pavilion's Brodie Tray lead or two, David Mann, who played 13 matches and was on the winning side every time.
