Tony fires Wick past EP

GOALS FROM Phil Turner and Tony Miles fired Wick FC into the quarter finals of the John O'Hara League Cup on Saturday, at the expense of local-rivals East Preston. They will now entertain either Sidlesham, Three Bridges or Worthing United in the last eight.

During a largely forgettable first half, Turner gave his side the lead on 39 minutes. He slotted into an unguarded net, after evading the challenge of EP keeper Tom Rand on the edge of the area.

In a much-improved second half, Wick's second and decisive goal, came on 54 minutes. Paul Williams' expertly-delivered free kick was met by Tony Miles who slotted a left-foot shot past Rand from six yards.

Two minutes earlier, East Preston had got themselves back on level terms when, from a corner, Tom Levitt nipped in front of marker Dave Hall to head the ball into the top of the net.

The first period was a niggly affair, and with both teams constantly giving the ball away, clear-cut chances were at a premium.
