Top trainers happy to beat a path to Fontwell

A strong line-up has been confirmed for Fontwell Park's latest midweek jump racing programme this afternoon.

A seven-race card begins at 2pm with the Fastener Network Ltd Novices’ Chase, in which champion trainer Paul Nicholls runs Doeslessthanme among a field of six.

The programme runs through to the last race at 5pm, the digibet.com Junior Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, which has attracted the afternoon’s biggest number of runners, 14.

Sussex trainers Nick Gifford and Gary Moore are among handlers sending runners to post. Moore’s entries include recent Wincanton winner Guards Chapel.

Another trainer to follow is in-form Charlie Longsdon, who runs Crystal Prince in the third.

Top jockeys due to ride include Fontwell specialists Richard Johnson, Jamie Moore and Tom Cannon.

Fontwell chief Phil Bell feels hard work by clerk of the course Ed Arkell and his team has helped keep the track’s race meetings competitive.

“Ed has received a lot of praise about the ground at Fontwell in recent weeks,” Bell said. “A lot of tracks can’t water and the ground is so firm it has left them with small fields. But we have been watering and it has helped our reputation.”

After today’s seven races, there will be a charity race at 5.15 in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The jockeys are people who ride for a hobby and always dreamed of getting out on a racecourse.
