Tough Wheeler wins two big races

Gill Wheeler kept the Hailsham flag flying high over the weekend with wins on Saturday and Sunday.

Wheeler won the second of this season's Sussex Cross-Country League races at Bexhill on Saturday and followed up with victory in the 10km race at Crowborough, regarded as the toughest of all on the Sussex circuit.

Wheeler, who had won the first Sussex League event at Goodwood in September, led in the first 50 yards of the women's three-mile race and stretched her lead all the way to the finish.

She finished 23 seconds clear of Emma Satterly (Phoenix) in 20 minutes 12 seconds and with two wins under her belt looks set to take the league title with two more races to come in the New Year.

At Crowborough on Sunday Wheeler clocked 39.29 for the ten kilometres and finished nearly two minutes clear of Alvarez, whose finishing time of 41.20 also earned her the women's veterans's title.
