Triathletes of all abilities wanted for Chichester's big sporty weekend

BUDDING sportsmen, women and children are being given the chance to emulate their London 2012 heroes by taking part in the Natures Way Foods Chichester Triathlon and Junior Aquathon.

The events, plus a Try-a-Tri event, will take place on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15.

You can enter the triathlon on your own or split the course as part of a three-person team and tackle one of the running, swimming and cycling events each.

The weekend’s events form part of the Chichester district’s Big Month, which also includes the opening of new museum The Novium as well as the Olympic Torch Relay on Monday, July 16.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for leisure and wellbeing at Chichester District Council, said: “With London 2012 inspiring people across the country to get active, we hope that many will be encouraged to celebrate the Olympics by tackling their very first Triathlon.”

The Junior Aquathlon will take place on Saturday 14 and is for children aged between eight and 16 years.

The event will include a swim at Westgate Leisure in Chichester and a run around Chichester College’s campus – with distances tailored for all ages.

The following day there will be a triathlon consisting of a 600m pool swim at Westgate Leisure Chichester, as well as a 42km (26-mile) cycle ride and a 10k (six-mile) run.

There will also be the ‘Try-a-Tri’ races for competitors who favour the shorter distance, making up half of each event.

Volunteers are also needed to steward the event and make sure it runs smoothly, with jobs such as athlete registration and marshalling points on running and swimming events.

Sarah Baldock, Natures Way Foods sales and marketing director, said: “Volunteering is another great way to get involved and we will be providing our own team to help make the weekend a great success.”

Cllr Lintill added: “Volunteering is a very rewarding way to play a big part in the success of the day. “For those who would like to be involved in this exciting event, but do not want to enter the race why not lend a hand as a volunteer?”
