Under-13s cause a Stir with cricket festival triumph

STIRLANDS under-13s have won their age-group competition at the Sussex junior cricket festival.

First they won at Arundel against the home-town team.

Stirlands won the toss and bowled out Arundel for 94. They reached the target in the 18th over for the loss of only five wickets.

Hugo Alun Jones took two for four off six overs and Ollie Viner took three for 15. In reply, Dan Mugford struck 40 not out.

At Bosham the hosts totalled 145 for six before Stirlands knocked off the runs in the 27th over for the loss of three wickets.

Charlie Norton took three for ten, Dom Fecher scored 61 not out and Dan Kendall got 27. The highlight of another good fielding display was a great catch from George Hayes and stumping from Ned Renwick.

The third game was at home to Findon, who were all out in the 36th over for 115. Stirlands passed the total in the 14th over.

Mugford took three for four, Jake Moores four for 25 and Kendall’s one over was a double wicket maiden.

Renwck scored a cracking 54 - his highest score - and Moores notched 41 not out.

That put Stirlands through a 35-over final against Lindfield at Worthng CC. Lindfield put them into bat and they hit 155 for seven.

George Briance scored 26, Ollie Viner 27, Mugford 24 and Kendall 31 not out.

When Lindfield replied Fecher took three for 18 and Fergus Guiry four for 23. Briance took a stunning catch in the deep.

After 30 overs, Lindfield were 20 runs ahead but when they needed 11 runs off the final over, they got only seven - winning the game with a run-out off the last ball.

It means Stirlands are under-13 Sussex county champions - now they aim to end the season by winning their league too.
