UNITED BANISH THE UNTHINKABLE

CONVINCING victory thrust Worthing United clear of relegation on the last day of the season. As it did Southwick, 2-0 at home to Eastbourne Town also on Saturday. Instead, East Grinstead went down with Pagham and Sidlesham because they missed a stoppage-time penalty and only drew 3-3 at Sidlesham after leading 2-0, then equalising 3-3 on 90 minutes. Had they won, Southwick would have fallen.

United's slide into trouble was ended with their first victory since beating East Preston eight games beforehand. But survival, or rather affirmation of the mid-table status merited by the football they have played this season, may not be enough to save the job of Ian Browne a season after he brought them out of Division 2.

The United board may be about to make a fateful decision.
