Univeiristy gives Chichester kids a taste of the Olympics

More than 60 children from the Chichester district tried Olympic sports for the first time in an event designed to inspire the next generation of champions.

The University of Chichester teamed up with affordable housing provider Affinity Sutton to organise the free event, giving them the chance to try sports such as handball, basketball and gymnastics that are growing in popularity thanks to the Olympics.

Jane Haskins, neighbourhood investment officer for Affinity Sutton, said: “We wanted to celebrate the Olympics and leave our own legacy. We introduced the kids to lots of different sports and we have given them the details of local clubs where they can carry on if they like them.”

The event at the University’s sports activity and research centre, attracted children aged six to 14 and was delivered by staff and students from the university who are qualified to coach both traditional and minority sports.

They also had the opportunity to meet Olympic torchbearer Ant Stewart, who ran a leg of the relay in Chichester, hold the Olympic torch and ask him about his experience of running with the Olympic flame.
