West Sussex bowlers dish out punishment in the capital

West Sussex B visited London at the weekend for a friendly.

They started slowly, winning only one game in the first session and two in the second to trail 10-6 and 107-81 in shots at lunch.

It was different in the afternoon with West Sussex making a clean sweep of all four games in the third session and taking three out of four in the final session for an overall win of 26-14 and 207-178.

In the singles Bognor’s Freddie Kaucher lost 27-7 but won 20-6 later. In the pairs, Bognor’s Mary Fair won 17-14 and 18-14 while, in the other pair, club-mates Betty Williams and Marlene Steel lost 16-11 and won 26-6.

In the triples Crablands’ Martin Hunt won 12-10 and lost 14-5 while in the other triple his club-mate Marie Nutt lost 14-6 and won 14-7. In the fours Bognor’s Pam Smith and Derek Fair with Crablands’ Les Dray lost 8-7 and won 11-8.

ARUN

In the inter-club championship for the national Denny Cup and Denny plate, Arun beat Worthing Field Place 76-73 in a tight finish.

They now progress to the last 32, in which they will play Bournemouth BC.

Arun were successful on two home rinks and one away.

Arun entertained the Grasshoppers in a six-rink men’s fixture.

The hosts won on five rinks and lost one for an overall 38-shot win.

At the halfway stage of ten ends scores were even, but as is becoming the norm of late, after the tea break the Arun bowlers surged ahead to claim victory.

Arun ladies narrowly won their friendly at Egham on the last end.

Arun 66 Bournemouth 82

Disappointed Arun ladies lost their Vivienne Trophy match against Bournemouth, winning on one rink at home and one away but losing by 16 shots overall.

Ashington visited Fittleworth for a friendly and came out on top by winning on two mats and just losing on the third for a 66-37 victory.

Scores: N Goodyer, P Gilpin, S Allen, B Williams lost 31-13, M Cook, J Adsett, A Jordan, D Herbert won 15-14, L White, M Wood, S Judd, C Martin lost 21-9.

DONNINGTON

Donnington entertained Fittleworth for the teams’ annual friendly. The visitors won 44-29.

Joan Jones, Sue Buckle, Terry Taws and Maggie Maggs drew 18-18 with L White, J Adsett, A Jordan and C Martin. Marjorie Beasley, Rob Stone, Innes Taylor and Ron Beasley went down 26-11 to J Lucking, B Adsett, R Lucking and D Herbert.

LAVANT

Lavant visited Chilgrove in the first leg of a series of four in competion for the Golden Bowl trophy.

Tony Bleach’s team had a poor game losing by 17 shots. Jim Sharrod’s team played well winning by six.

Chilgrove won the leg 44-33.

Lavant Red, at home to Clapham & Patching, had a good win.

Peter Winter’s team scored well all the way to take the game by 14 shots. Peter Whale’s team scored heavily throughout and won by 21 shots.

HUNSTON

Hunston v Barnham

Barnham were too strong for hosts Hunston, running out 55-41 winners.

NYETIMBER

The top-of-the-table clash between Nyetimber Gold and Lavant Green resulted in a six-point win for Nyetimber.

The hosts led all the way on mat one where G Booker, J Leake, B Crew and skip S Syrett beat M Lillywhite, E Keane, V Frost and P Massey 29-17.

On mat two, Gold again led throughout except early on and they were helped by scores of six and five on three ends.

The Gold team of I Hathaway, G King, A Crew and P Skinner (skip) beat Lavant’s W Cooper, P Lillywhite, S Lillywhite and B Cooper (skip) 35-11 for an overall score of 64-28. There was consolation for Lavant on the friendly mat when they won 25-13.

THE MARTLETS

In their latest West Sussex League match, newly-promoted Martlets hosted the champions of the past ten years Chanctonbury Foxes.

A two-rink affair saw The Martlets continue their unbeaten record as they beat the champions 6-0 and 42-88 in shots.

Jane Eyre, Chris Rolph, Jack Rollings and Kyle McGowan scored a count of four on the 11th end to go 15-8 up. The Foxes played themselves back into contention but McGowan’s rink rallied at the death and finished with a well-deserved count of four to conclude the score 23-17 up.

Chris Blackman, Nic Dudman, Mel Lillywhite and Marc Lancaster found themselves ten shots clear. The sides shared the remaining ends and an eight-shot victory was gained by The Martlets.
