Southbourne Rovers lost at home in south-west zone division two of the West Sussex Winter League against Crablands Avocets.

Each team won on one mat and Crablands won overall by nine shots.

Having suffered a drought of points over recent games, joyous Crablands Avocets were delighted to come away with four points.

For Avocets, both mats got away to a good start with both gaining the first shots on the first end. However, there the two mats’ similarities ended.

On mat one, with supurb leadership by skip Don Jonas, the team were 5-5 on the eighth end. On several ends Avocets were holding three or four shots but with luck riding with the home team, this was taken away by their skip.

Together with a one-sided mat, and Jonas being the only Avocet able to play that side, Avocets’ Joan Taylor, Harry Stead and Elaine Sadler were only able to win another seven shots while Southbourne picked up 18, making them clear winners 23-12.

On mat two, again the two teams were even, 3-3 on the fifth end, but a good all-round effort by skip Alan Foot and his team of Celia Foot, Sylvia Gray and Peter Latchford notched up a five on the next end and never looked back.

With multi-scores on many ends they eventually won 29-9, gaining the two extra match points for an overall win.

Ecstatic captain Alan Foot said: “We all had to work really hard and it was a good team effort. We were fortunate they got bogged down and we were able to score well. It’s nice to get some league points after so many games of not having any – it looks good for our remaining few matches.”

Scores (Southbourne names): Irene Jennings, John Staker, Pete Jasinski & Alan Williams (s) won 23-12; Kathy Shelley, Colin Bulbeck, Margaret Odell & Alan Shelley (s) lost 29-9.
