Schools representing West Sussex West at the Sussex School Games did their region proud as they won medals in two sports at the '˜mini-Olympic and Paralympic Games'.

West Sussex West came third overall with a silver medal for The Regis School in MLD Football, a bronze for Chichester High School for Boys in the rugby and other vital points from Jessie Younghusband, Edward Bryant, Lavant House and Southway schools.

Highlights from the winter finals included a runners-up place for Ameila McDonald-Saull in the photography competition and the appearance of Olympic bronze medal-winning hockey star Alex Danson, who was there to inspire the competitors.

The school games took place at Lancing College. The event’s winter finals is an annual competition focusing on team sport. It features football, hockey, netball and rugby sevens and 400-plus children took part on the day.

Active Sussex and the Sainsbury’s School Games local organising committee put the day together.

The southern area schools were overall winners.

Sadie Mason, chief executive of Active Sussex said: “The Winter Games was a fantastic chance for Sussex schools to come together for a day of team sport.”

Olympic hockey star Danson, who won bronze with Team GB at London 2012, said: “It was a privilege to be the guest of honour at the Sainsbury’s School Games. The winter finals is a perfect example of all that is good about team competition in our schools.”
