West Wittering show great sportsmanship - and so do their rivals

West Wittering Primary School demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship in defeating sporting rivals Central Primary School and Edward Bryant Primary School at Chichester's latest mini games (above).

It meant they followed East Wittering Primary, who won the first games in the 2011 series.

The event, organised by Sportsmanship First, Chichester District Council and Chichester University and held at the university’s Bishop Otter sports fields – is for schools who have taken part in Sportsmanship First workshops, which help children understand the benefits of every child, regardless of ability, being given confidence to encourage and praise each other.

The secret in the success of schools like West Wittering and East Wittering is that staff fully embrace the SF concept.

West Wittering headteacher Sue O’Boyle says: “SF has made a real difference to the attitude of children on and off the field.”

Stephen Crossley, founder of SF, was invited to attend East Wittering Primary’s sports day and said: “I witnessed one of the best displays of sportsmanship I’ve ever seen. Witnessing true sportsmanship is inspiring and gives volunteers the inspiration to continue with this work.

“Sportsmanship First is exploring inter parish games where villages will take part in games to encourage competition and sportsmanship.”
