Westfield down top flight rivals

The home side never looked back in this SCFA RUR Charity Cup first round tie from the moment they took a stunning third minute lead on Bank Holiday Monday morning.

Unlike two days' previously Westfield played with their head and waited to pick off their higher grade opponents rather than go all-out in search of more goals.

Delighted boss Steve Johnson said: "We were excellent. That was as good a performance as I have ever see them play. We carried on from where we left off in the first half on Saturday, but we learnt our lesson from that game and didn't go chasing the game. We had a lot of attacks but we didn't go chasing goals."

The writing was on the wall pretty early in this match when goalkeeper Peter Newstead launched a long kick upfield and the ball bounced clear of the Hailsham defence and into the path of the marauding Dom Clarke who let fly with a 25-yard drive which thundered into the net.

Ten minutes before half time and it was 2-0 with Chris Smith grabbing his first goal of the season after good work by Tony Harris.

They made certain of their passage into the next round 11 minutes from time when a short corner was tucked away by Clarke for his fourth goal in two games. Just before the killer third substitute Sam Jamison hit the post.

Johnson said: "Hailsham have won two, lost two and drawn one in the league this season so they're not a bad side."
