Westfield on a high

WESTFIELD moved up to second in Sussex Division Two on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win at Haywards Heath Town.

The victory extended a quite extraordinary sequence of results away from home.

Steve Johnson's side have not lost on their travels since the 3-0 reverse at Rye & Iden United back in early January and much of their success is founded upon an increasingly miserly rearguard which has kept five clean sheets from six league matches this season.

The back four was again in resolute form to provide the foundation for their fourth victory out of six league encounters.

Johnson said: "It wasn't our best performance but defensively we were very good. We were a bit anxious at times especially when we hadn't scored but once we scored the goal we settled down a bit."

That decisive strike came at a crucial time - three minutes from the break - where, once again, the value of determination was clearly borne out. Dominic Clarke flicked the ball on, Duncan Jones diverted it goalwards and Clarke managed to beat the covering defender in the race for the loose ball to prod home.

Westfield are back at the Parish Field on Saturday September 13 for the visit of struggling Pease Pottage Village.
