Westfield show no mercy in 18-0 win

WESTFIELD showed no mercy as they romped to an incredible 18-0 win over Pease Pottage Village.

Lawrence Brand, Duncan Jones and Dominic Clarke all helped themselves to four goals apiece and Alan Johnson smashed a hat-trick as the home side went to town at the Parish Field on Saturday.

Manager Steve Johnson said: "We scored some quite good goals and some quite easy goals where players were queuing up to score and there were some bizarre misses where the ball hit the keeper and the post. We could have had even more - it could have been double the amount."

The Sussex Division Two basement boys were hardly in the best frame of mind for the match as they had lost manager Dudley Christensen during the week.

The Crawley-based Pottage team only turned up 10 minutes before the scheduled 3pm kick-off time which had to be put back half-an-hour as their kitman was for some reason driving through Winchelsea. They only had the bare 11 and most of them were teenagers ill equipped to cope with the demands of senior football.

"It was a bit of a waste of time," admitted Johnson. "We weren't expecting them to be a great side but I have never seen anything like it in the County League. We would have been better off them not turning up and having a practice match."

Pottage ended the match with only nine men as they had Michael Taylor sent off for dissent and Dave Webb went off injured before the start of the second half.

The Westfield scorers were Brand (1, 26, 48, 89), Jones (5, 6, 70, 73), Clarke (6, 47, 86, 87), Johnson (13, 27, 51), Russell Keen (32) and substitute Justin Jirbandey (53, 78).

Westfield can expect a much stiffer test on Saturday September 20 when Wick visit the Parish Field.
