Wheatsheaf can't sink Ship in darts showdown

A division-one top-of-the-table clash in the Bognor Friday Night Darts League between The Ship and The Wheatsheaf saw The Ship extend their lead at the top with a 10-8 win.

The Royal Oak, third in the league, were 11-5 winners at The Prince of Wales.

Division-three leaders Chichester Snooker Club A extended their lead over second-placed Claremont Cobras with an 11-7 win at home to the Friary DJs.

The surprise result came from the bottom team Family Tree as they held third-placed BRSA B 8-8.

Bognor Star Darts

Second-placed Wheatsheaf travelled to face top team Richmond but squandered the few chances they had as The Richmond enjoyed a convincing win.

The Wheatsheaf saw it slip away when young Harry Annals failed to win the first leg after 12 attempts at a double against his opponent Simon Woods, whose magical darts that once made him one of Sussex’s top players.

Woods was a 3-0 winner before Andy Hills brought the Wheatsheaf back into it, beating Richmond’s Dave Reed 2-1.

Wheatsheaf’s captain Jason Hills played Richmond captain James Greenfield, both competing to be top of the averages.

Hills hit only one 100-plus score and Greenfield was a 3-0 winner. Victory was secured when Richmond’s Lee Gladman beat Wheatsheaf’s Graeme Dutton 3-0.

Wheatsheaf went down 2-0 in the pairs, but in the captains’ cup, Hills and Greenfield tied at 14-14 before a fantastic performance from Hills completed the 701 leg in 16 darts.

Third-placed Claremont travelled to Hunston club and were no match for the hosts. Cliff Prior hit a 180 and in the singles Hunston were 8-4 winners. The pairs ended 1-1 to give hunston a 9-5 victory.

The Eastgate and The Crown shared the honours in a 7-7 draw. Captain Adi Linfield continued his winning run in the captains’ cup, putting him joint second with James Greenfield only one point behind leader Jason Hills.

Four local players have been selected for this season’s county squad.

In the men’s A team are Midhurst-based Super League player Jason Hills and team-mate Bognor’s Gary Blackwood. In the Men’s B team is Terry Howse from Bognor, making his county debut.

The Sussex ladies’ A team includes Chichester’s Hayley Gatford, who plays in the Super League. Sussex visit Buckinghamshire this weekend.

World championship play-offs

Sussex players returned from Hull with little to celebrate.

The best performances came from Jim Withers and Jason Hills, both reaching the third round. Hills eliminated pro player Gary Thompson of Yorkshire in the second round in straight sets.

In the third round his match went all the way to the final leg.

Hills lost the first set 3-2 but opened the second set with a 12-darter and dominated the set. The third set saw Hills miss tops and double ten0 to break the throw. The match was tense at 2-2 in the final leg when his opponent struck a 180 followed by a 170 finish.

Midhurst & District Winter Darts League

The Midhurst and District Winter League starts this week with two divisions of ten teams.
