With other commitments taking priority, plus travelling to Worthing from Southampton becoming more of a struggle, Thunder coach Daniel Hildreth has agreed to release Wilkins and wished him all the best for the rest of the season with the Division 3 South side, currently unbeaten with a 7-0 record.

Hildreth said: “It’s a real shame for me and the team but unfortunately unavoidable.

“The logistics of travel and work were always going to be a struggle but John has done everything possible to make this happen. He is an important part of the puzzle and one of the nicest guys I’ve met through basketball.

“He will be sorely missed by the guys but we all respect his decision. Both the club and myself wish him every success in his future playing career and he will always be welcome back in a Thunder shirt.”

Thunder recorded a third successive win in National League Division 1 on Saturday, when a Milton Chavis three-pointer on the buzzer gave them a 83-82 win at Bradford.

Worthing entertain Essex Leopards on Saturday, with a 7.30pm tip-off.
