World Cup hero Hurst delights football fans

ENGLISH football's finest hour was relived when Sir Geoff Hurst MBE regaled a sold-out audience at the Cinque Ports Hotel.

The only player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final recounted tales of 1966 before a gathering of more than 100 at the Style Promotions-organised and Bibby Financial Services-sponsored sixth Sporting Dinner.

Sir Geoff, who scored 24 goals in 49 appearances for the national side, spoke about that winning goal, unity within the squad, the late Bobby Moore and the England side of today.

"It was a great night," said Terry Avann, of the 1066 Sporting Club, the event's main beneficiary. "Everyone seemed happy and Sir Geoff was a good lad."

Sir Geoff's speech followed a three course dinner and the evening was rounded off by another humorous delivery by comedian Adger Brown and an auction of some top draw sporting memorabilia.

A World Cup winning colleague of Hurst's, Alan Ball, will be the special guest at the eighth Sporting Dinner at the Cinque Ports on November 24. Ron 'Chopper' Harris is set to be the star attraction at the seventh Sporting Dinner in October. Hospitality and sponsorship packages are available from Dale Seymour at Style Promotions on 423123.
